For a film that, after seeing the trailer, I preemptively deemed "the dumbest movie ever made" this was mildly enjoyable for a while. I wish that Hugh Jackman would do more films like The Fountain or The Prestige, that utilize his impressive emotional range, but even in a role like this he has such a great, likable presence that makes him enjoyable to watch and easy to root for. It's unfortunate that the writers had no idea how to write a child role and turned in a character that was right from the start doomed to be one of the most annoying things of the year.
Dakota Goyo could probably give a half-decent performance under the right writer/director, but here he's saddled with a mess of a "too cool for school" kid that grates on the nerves almost immediately and only gets worse as it goes on (the scene where he grabs the microphone in the ring might honestly be the most annoying thing in film this year. Hard to care about the father/son relationship when I wish the son wasn't anywhere near the screen. The subplots with Evangeline Lilly and Kevin Durand are dreadfully thin and totally worthless, but in a film loaded with clichés it seems kind of silly to complain about a couple of smaller ones tossed on top.
Still, in spite of everything, I think my graveyard low expectations helped me to kind of enjoy it for a while. It wasn't anything great, but it was some inoffensive, light and easy entertainment and didn't bog itself down too much with the clichéd melodramatic themes for the first hour or so. Then came the second hour which was pretty much one nauseatingly saccharine moment after another. By the time they did a slow motion shot of Goyo and Lilly crying while watching Jackman box, I had completely checked out and resigned to hating myself. On a side note, it was nice seeing Anthony Mackie in a small role just having a lot of fun after doing such serious stuff for the past few years.

This movie was a very bad ripoff from I, robot and Rocky. Only very very very bad. The acting was bad, the characters unbelievable, the script sucked, the story was the worst I have seen in years. Sure, fighting robots are cool, and even with no story at all I would have rewarded more stars. But this story was so bad, that I got irritated the whole movie. I haven't said this many times the word f#ck in two hours ever! I was actually hoping for the robot to shout out: ADRIAAAAAAAAN!
So, no laughs, no thrills, no fun. Only fighting robots. br> And that kid, really, don't quit school! You can't act!
